Flying KLM Airways I stopped over in Amsterdam |
A few months ago, I made the decision to return to the country I was born in and explore opportunities. With the world economy in a mess, it seems that everywhere presents its challenges. People are losing jobs, can't find jobs and are graduating without finding something to help recover from the thousands of dollars of debt they have accumulated.
I once read that the average American University graduate can have over $100,000 in debt. That's before buying a car or house. It's all student loans. Such a change from generations ago who left school in a better financial position than students do today.
I, myself, have been on a journey. A creative journey through life. Having worked in many different areas, my experiences can be a challenge to potential employers. Which, is why I have had to carve out my own niche and create my own opportunities in life.
It's funny because I have heard so many people make rude remarks about people going 'back to where they came from'. It's usually been in a derogatory sense. Implying that immigrants somehow are not facilitating the growth of the country. My parents brought me abroad to pursue a life of unlimited potential. In many countries in Africa, the people see escaping to America, Canada, U.K. and other parts of Europe as an escape. People strive to leave the continent in pursuit of a better life.
I have spent the better part of my life living in Canada and a small part in the United States. This decision to travel back to Africa is not only a journey to my homeland but, also a journey to explore the richness in a continent that is often ignored. A richness that is a huge potential that many refuse to see.
As I write this, I have already arrived in Ghana to start my journey but, I wanted to start with this as a prelude to this 8700 Km trip across the Atlantic to discover not only myself but, the land I came from. This is not my first time here. But, it is the first time I will be staying for an extended period of time. This is just the beginning of another chapter in this life....
